Print on demand technology and the effort by various parties to scan in old books has again brought to life a great many classics. This book Hayti; Or, The Black Republic by Spenser B. St. John is one such classic. St. John was a British Diplomat so the book's viewpoint is from a pro-British vantage. This position gives the book a greater ring of truth than what one sees from the pan-African crowd. The critical years of the Napoleonic Wars, where British and French soldiers and sailors vied for control of the West Indians is mentioned. In the end, British control of the sea and Yellow Fever is what gave Haiti independence.
St. John paints a grim picture of Haiti and its people, he is very frank about the nation's decline to barbarism. Even so, he mentions in his introduction that his first draft was "too severe" and so more time and research was given to mute his criticism.
In sum, this book could have just as easily been written a century later. 1980s Haiti was a basketcase. In the years following the 2010 earth quake, not much has been done to fix the infrastructure. The nation has no real government and is run by various charities.
After reading this book it seems to this reviewer that investment in its people is nothing more than a massive waste. Only a glib politician like President Bill Clinton could possibly say otherwise.
Clear writing, measured sentences, excellent work.
